Our Story
Behind the Scenes
Our Mission
The Daily Bread's mission is to empower people to enhance health, end hunger and overcome hardship.
Our Vision
The Daily Bread envisions a world in which the most vulnerable will have the power to lift themselves out of poverty and to create vital, healthy lives for their families and communities now and for the future.
What We do
Fast and Active Disaster Response:
Our responses to disasters vary considerably, dependent on prevailing conditions in identified disaster or war zones.
We have the immediate capacity to deliver all the appropriate materials, inclusive of :
Temporary shelter;
Bedding and blankets;
Basic foodstuffs, inclusive of baby provisions;
The Daily Bread Ready Food Supplement (a high-energy and protein supplement, innovated by The Daily Bread – and the first of its kind in the world);
A wide range of medical supplies, medical equipment and ambulances; and
Generators for emergency power supply.
In addition, we are able to immediately call on professional search and rescue teams and medical specialists, whilst facilitating the evacuation of affected people.
We also undertake the rebuilding and/or rehabilitation of infrastructure, such as homes, schools and medical facilities damaged during crises.
A Passion for Hunger Alleviation:
Hunger is a universal problem.
In recognition of this, we distribute in excess of 100 000 food parcels annually, prepare and serve hot meals at our own centres, whilst also supporting existing feeding schemes through the provision of thousands of meals on a daily basis.
We further assist in key agricultural projects, supporting subsistence farmers in distress, as well as providing animal feed for needy farmers during crippling drought events.
Committed to the Provision of Water:
Water is a precious and scarce resource and one evermore affected by global climate change.
We have in place a number of water tankers, used for the delivery of water to desperate communities, and actively encourage the harvesting and recycling of water, whilst also establishing desalination treatment plants and providing point-of-use water purification solutions and – as a last resort – go so far as to provide bottled water to critically-affected communities.
We are integrally involved with borehole drilling operations, together with the development of such sites at schools, clinics and other central community points. Our team, headed by a geohydrologist with more than 40 years experience, is responsible for the sighting, drilling, testing, developing and monitoring all our borehole sites on a continuous basis.
Promoting Social Upliftment:
The under-development of many historically disadvantaged communities is regarded as a massive socio-economic problem.
Recognising this, we have developed a series of programmes designed to promote the empowerment and dignity of our young people, including:
The provision of a range of school supplies for young learners;
A toll-free telephonic, as well as face-to-face counselling service;
Life skills training interventions and workshops; and
Skills development initiatives.
Creating an Environment Conducive to Education:
We contribute towards the creation of an environment conducive to the improved education of the disadvantaged.
We have in place:
A comprehensive bursary programme, providing opportunities for deserving candidates to complete their tertiary education; an education they would have otherwise been denied;
A schools infrastructural development programme, improving – in particular – the quality of school toilets and the provision of potable water within educational institutions; and
A school-level entrepreneurial development programme, Jumpstart, at identified KwaZulu-Natal schools, which is designed to plant the seed of entrepreneurship in the minds of Grade 10 and 11 learners, by facilitating their ability to start their own small businesses. Our objective is to engender a high degree of self-belief, giving learners the ability to transform their business ideas into productive business entities and so contribute to the upliftment of their communities. Our intention is to stimulate an entrepreneurial spirit amongst learners in a concerted effort to empower young, aspiring entrepreneurs and to promote the essence of entrepreneurship in the face of growing levels of unemployment.

We realised that the need within our community is great. With a realisation of the magnitude of the need and our own inability to alleviate all social ills, we started small. We started where we were able and could to bring change to peoples lives in every small way we could. We started with one thing, one person and one group at a time since 2013. We each time see how we could love our community. We have had children experiencing the warmth of an adult’s embrace. We partnered with the HOPE initiative for Kentucky Child program and sponsored 35 children with a streetwise two meal. We were moved as children asked: “Is it all for me?”. Their generous spirit by immediately wanting to share the moment with their parents. Never having had a full meal in their lives, their big-heartedness confirmed to us our mission and invigorated us to follow this chosen path and cause. Full-force ahead, we will pursue a changed community.
What is a story that keeps us going?

Our recent beneficiary story highlights the plight of 85-year-old Gogo Thandi Gcwabe who lived in a worn-out makeshift shack with broken window, and leaking roof which was infested by cat-like rodents who were terrorising the family. Gogo Gcwabe is caring for 5 orphaned children and the family daily survived on food handouts from the community members and sometimes the family slept on empty stomach. The Daily Bread was informed by community members of the plight of Gogo Gcwabe. We immediately sprang into action by assessing their needs; and our immediate response was to help with food parcels. The primary goal was to assist with building the house; and with the support of an Afroworld journalist and the local councillor the government managed to build Gogo Gcwabe a house. Although the situation has slightly improved and with our organisation continually supporting the family with food donations; a lot still to be needed to demolish the shacks and to clean the yard; and also assist the grandchild to go to college or find a job. Gogo’s new house also needs wardrobe, bed, kitchen utensils and essential home items.

The South Africa NPO community takes the threat posed by COVID-19 very seriously and welcomes recent measures announced by the government to limit the spread of the virus and to prepare for the outbreak.
We know that it is the poorest and most vulnerable people who are most at risk of losing their lives and livelihoods. The people we serve are already impacted by the climate crisis- recurrent and persistent droughts, locus infestation and conflict. The 1.8 million internally displaced persons and vulnerable groups face heightened risks due to inadequate sanitation and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) facilities, often crowded living conditions and lack of access to decent healthcare. While the virus does not discriminate, we recognize that it is likely to impact poorer households more negatively and require additional vigilance and tailored responses.
Our priority is to work with the people we serve to protect them and stop the spread of this deadly corona virus. In partnership with the government and key actors, we are strengthening preventative sanitation and ensuring access to accurate information, while raising awareness among our stuff on how to alleviate the spread of the corona virus. We need to do everything we can to keep humanitarian staff healthy so they can continue to deliver critical aid.
National contingency plans must not leave displaced communities or other vulnerable groups behind, especially when it comes to securing the availability and accessibility of services for testing and hospitalization. We realize that well-managed preparedness and control mechanisms will be key to alleviate the destructive effects of this outbreak. We at The Daily Bread are taking our responsibility to contribute, effectively.
We must work together in our communities with dignity, resilience, solidarity and compassion. We will continue to support the efforts of the South African government and to follow applicable guidelines by the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation and while ensuring that the most vulnerable still have access to essential services and enjoy fundamental protections. We ask our donors, partners and the international to support us as we do so.

THE DAILY BREAD
Make a Difference Today
THE DAILY BREAD wants to spread our message of hope and compassion. We believe that a single action can make a difference in the community, and that collective action can greatly impact the world. Through advocacy and outreach activities, our team works tirelessly each day to contribute their part to the greater good.
Backing the global fight against hunger, our aim is to contribute in the quest to save the lives of the starving and malnourished – human or animal.
From serving a warm plate of food to a starving child, to providing vital feed for cattle suffering the result of drought, and from distributing vital supplies to families living in war zones to feeding people displaced by natural disasters, we work tirelessly to ensure those in need are freed from hunger.
Apart from such short-term assistance, we continuously search for and deliver effective solutions, designed to give effect to long-term change, developing and implementing small-scale self-help agricultural projects within needy communities, empowering them to improve food security levels.
In addition, we continue making available our protein-based The Daily Bread Food Supplement, the world’s first groundnut high-energy and protein supplement, which requires no refrigeration. The product, innovated by ourselves, is ideal as a disaster-relief foodstuff and is provided to people who are – as a result of disaster displacement – rendered sub-clinically malnourished
